Mercedes-Benz S 400 Hybrid 2014_test drive_01The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is available with three different hybrid systems. The lineup starts with the S 300 BlueTEC Hybrid. It is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine (150 kW) and an electric motor 20 kW). If you want a petrol engined model, then your choice is this S 400 Hybrid. It’s 3.5-litre petrol engine provides 225 kW and the electric motor delivers another 20 kW.

The most powerful of the trio is the S 500 Plug-In Hybrid. It is powered by a 3.0-litre, turbocharged petrol engine delivering 245 kW combined with 80-kW electric motor. Due to its plug-in possibility, it is also the most economical of the trio with overall fuel consumption of 3.0 l/100km and CO2 emissions of 69 g/km.

Compared to the predecessor, this new Mercedes-Benz S 400 Hybrid is 20 percent more fuel efficient. The combined NEDC fuel consumption is 6.3 l/100km and the CO2 emissions are 147 g/km. Not bad for a car that weighs close to two tons. On our test drive the combined fuel consumption was close to 9.0 l/100km. The compact hybrid module is a disc-shaped electric motor that also acts as a starter and generator. When the vehicle decelerates, the electric motor acts as a generator and recuperates the braking energy.

In addition to saving the fuel, the electric motor also has the boost function to improve the performance when needed. The Mercedes-Benz S 400 Hybrid can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and reach electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

In addition to the standard version, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is also available as a long-wheelbase model. If the chauffeur is driving and the owner is enjoying the rear legroom, then the L version might the right choice with its 130 mm longer wheelbase.

There are also different seating variants available. You can choose between five different seating solutions for the long-wheelbase model, whether you want two- or three-seater version. The rear seats with separate adjustments provide the maximum travel comfort.

And if you are required to take longer trips, the Individual Entertainment system in the rear provides entertainment. It comprises a second DVD player , two high-resolution 10-inch displays, radio remote control, two wireless headsets, two USB ports and an AUX socket. With the optional Burmester Sound System, you can turn your car into a concert hall.
