We took a test drive with the new Mercedes-Benz GLE, which is now available also as a coupe version. With its muscular wings, large wheel arches and the high belt line, this new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe has a very powerful presence. The front end design details include the short overhang, upright sports grille, all-LED headlamps and forward-sloping bonnet with power domes.
The rear end features design elements from other Mercedes-Benz coupe models, like the new S-Class Coupe. These include the wide chrome insert fitted above rear lights, the rear window with rounded off top and the registration plate incorporated into the rear bumper. The chrome-plated underride guard in the front and rear present the reference to the SUV models. The stylish look is finalized with the huge alloy wheels. As standard, the car has 20-inch wheels with 275/50 tyres. The 21-inch and 22-inch wheels are available as an option.
The engine lineup includes the GLE 400 4Matic (235 kW / 480 Nm) and the GLE 450 AMG (270 kW / 520 Nm) petrol models. The sportiest choice is the GLE 63 AMG. The only diesel engine is this GLE 350 d. It provides 190 kW (258 hp) and 620 Nm of torque. The diesel engine delivers its performance so softly that the car doesn’t actually feel very sporty. But thanks to the huge torque, the car is very enjoyable to drive. The Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 d Coupe accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 7,3 seconds, and the top speed is 227 km/h.
When you want to enjoy the car’s full performance potential, the 9G-TRONIC transmission offers an impressively quick gear changes. On the other hand, when cruising, the gear changes are barely noticeable. The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system feature even torque distribution of 50:50 between the front and rear axles. The GLE 450 AMG Coupe has the sportier 40:60 ratio.
The GLE 350 d and GLE 400 4MATIC models feature the AGILITY CONTROL steel suspension as standard with a amplitude-selective damping system. The newly designed AIRMATIC air suspension is available as an option. The AIRMATIC is available for the first time with the continuously variable damping system ADS Plus offering extremely stable driving experince.
